Individual therapy is designed to help individuals develop new meanings and behaviors in
their lives. The therapist uses techniques to treat mental disorders or problems of everyday
living. Psychotherapy involves the establishment and maintenance of a supportive relationship
between the patient and therapist in which the patient is encouraged to discuss concerns
without the fear of judgment or criticism on the part of the therapist. The therapist helps
the patient understand the problem and bring about a more effective adjustment to the
patient's environment.
Individual therapy is appropriate for and helpful to children, adolescents, adults, and
older adults experiencing a wide variety of psychological, emotional, family, social, and
behavioral problems.
