Formal neuropsychological testing is a process through which
cognitive processes, for example, language, attention, and
memory functions, are assessed and compared with known
standards for a particular individual's age group in order to
draw conclusions regarding possible brain dysfunction. Often
administered in conjunction with medical tests, for example,
MRI scans, neuropsychological testing can provide information
regarding a pattern of demonstrated brain functions that may be
consistent with specific types of brain injuries or more chronic
conditions. Information obtained through neuropsychological
testing may be used to address questions of an underlying medical
condition or as a basis for recommendations regarding beneficial
changes in an individual's work, school, or living environments.
